What do physios do?
I've been thinking about the role of a physiotherapist and what we actually do. I've come to the simple conclusion that we help improve patients' quality of life. This can include improving mobility, recommending adaptations and implementing aids for those with various conditions, including respiratory, neurological, and muscular conditions.
We strive to improve patients' lives by helping them manage their long-term conditions through self-management, movement, understanding their conditions, and referring them to appropriate services. Putting patients at the heart of everything we do, we tailor our treatments to meet their specific needs. Our treatments are never the same, and sometimes they may be unconventional and holistic to truly see improvements.
Unfortunately, we are only known for helping with muscle pains and aches. However, the pandemic highlighted the vital role of physiotherapists in managing COVID-19. COVID-19 affected respiratory systems, and long hospital stays meant those affected became deconditioned, requiring long-term rehab. Physiotherapists are crucial in helping people regain their independence while simultaneously improving their quality of life, whatever that means to them.
